No we are not doing the race it is our own ride that we are planning. Currently all of the seats are taken on our Sports Group but if others want to start their own group and lead a ride there on the same day that would work out great. We can pass along the info that we have as well as the GPS data to follow on the trail.

Our group is doing the 28 mile run with a few stops but mostly will keep moving. We are planning to ride this trail system now since the race would have been two weeks before so the trails will have a good fresh cut to it making it easy to see. We also want to beat most of the leaves before they fall. So if you want to lead your group up there for a ride let me know and I can pass the info along to you. Have Fun

The Terror of Teaberry is one of the hardest trail system to ride in the area, so be prepared for the Rock Gardens.

Dan Sabella

wccc-mtb@comcast.net

Congratulations Christiane!

We are proud of you!

Cycling in Chester County

John D and I posted a 'Training" ride for Saturday, but only one brave soul actually signed-up for it. So we decided to tag-along with Ed, Julie and Libby and their band of happy riders.
Okay, the pace was more relaxed than I remembered, but I kept telling myself, "This is where you started last season and everyone waited for you." With that mantra replaying in my mind, I began to settle in with the group. Sure, it was tempting to sprint ahead and 'dash' up the hills, but to what end? These folks enjoyed riding at this pace and who was I to think differently.
With 17 riders weaving their way through Chester County, I couldn't help to think about the pure joy cycling brings to my life.
I guess I've been a life-long athlete. I ran track in high school, threw javelin, played semi-pro football and was a power-lifter in the Air Force and was on a Flag Football Team until my late 30's. I've run 5K and 10K races. I been riding MTB for over 10 years and road riding for 2, but nothing (except for playing football) gives me the rush and joy that I get from cycling. Yes, I loath climbing hills, but I understand the physics behind (no pun intended) why hills are my Achilles heel.
That brings me back to my ride yesterday with the C+ group. At no-time did I feel out of place with this group. Nor did they think I was there to teach them how to climb better or hammer on the flats. I was there to ride with a fine group of people on a beautiful Saturday morning in September.
After all, they enjoyed cycling for what it is: pure and simple fun. It's that knowledge that keeps me coming out week-in and week-out.
Thank you for allowing me to enjoy this wonderful sport again!

Hello all,John D. and Mike V. will be co-leading the Training Ride that Frank and Alice normally lead. The route we will be riding should not be too difficult and will give riders an opportunity to practice pace-line riding and other cycling skills. While there some hills to climb, we feel they should not be too difficult for this level. At the end of the ride, John and Mike are planning on riding an additional 7-10 miles (probably taking 842 towards Unionville and back). If anyone is interested, we will turn around after we cross the bridge before turning left to climb 842.

See you tomorrow morning!

Two Missed Turns

Mike:

At the second re-group I saw you waving AT THE TOP OF THE HILL. Thanks, buddy. In any event, I missed the turn at Mortenville Rd (small print on road sign - I need new contacts) and then I spent about 15 minutes in Modena trying to find Woodland, until I realized " oo a Rd" was Woodland with almost all of the letters gone. Threw in an extra hill going up North Brandywine in Modena trying to find Woodland. Nice view of the sewage treatment plant. Once I figured out Woodland, I followed the rest of the cue sheet. Got to Iron Hill at about 12:55.

I agree with the "disguise" comment. Ended up with 11 riders total.
John D, what happened? I saw you saddle-up after we regrouped, but then you were gone. Did you finish the ride with Michelle's and Jeff's group (Group #1)? Sorry my friend. I slowed on Modena hoping you would catch us but I guess you went another route.
Back to the ride:
Ok...so I must admit, the hills were killing me. When we climbed Harvey's Bridge and I knew straight away that I was going to be struggling. The first half of the ride was hilly too, which didn't make me feel any better.
Some of the riders in my group were very strong riders (I think they were "Super B's" in disguise). No matter, several riders hammered through the middle miles of the cue sheet. I was told there were some wrong turns but eventually everyone regrouped and we rode together from Friendship Church Road. We stopped to fill our bottles at the pub on Springdell when we saw Group #1 overtake us.
Note: Rte. 841 is a mess. They are resurfacing the road and it is quite nasty. I recommend staying off of it until it's paved. Then it should be smooth and very fast!
The remainder of the ride back to WC was your typical B+ ride: Fast on the flats and fast on the hills.
I am not sure what the avg. speed was for lead riders in my group, my avg. speed was 15.6 m.p.h. I assume their avg. speed was well in excess of 16 m.p.h.
Thanks for a great ride everyone!

Mike V.
aka Bike Rider

Ride Report for Saturday

Holy Duck Butter Batman!

There were 14 brave souls this morning ready to ride in the Soup du Jour. Yes, it was foggy (actually, it was more like a steamy-hot wet wool blanket) went we started at 7:30.
The group naturally split on the way up 842 towards Northbrook.
Now I know how King Salmon must feel swimming upstream to spawn.
After a brief regroup at Northbrook, several riders hammered on Rte. 842 towards Unionville while others (me) plodded along. At some point, the faster group just kept on going. Then that huge ball of burning hydrogen and helium began to appear. Sure, the fog began to lift which improved visibility, but oh boy, did it start to get HOT!
Jack, Mike and Dave rode from the mini-mart at Rte 41 all the way back in to Dub C.
We took a detour off Rte. 841 since the road was being resurfaced and another group of riders (not WCCC) were cussing and swearing as they sat in the heat changing a flat. So, we rode down Rte 926 to Wollaston Rd, made a left on Rte 82 and a right on Green Valley Road and picked up the cue sheet from there. We passed Frank's and Alice's peloton on Apple Grove Road-what a large group they have!!!

Despite the heat, humidity and the profuse sweating, we still managed an avg. speed of 15.7 m.p.h. for 45 miles.

Clincher Racing Tire Selection

I've recently been doing some research to support my next racing tire purchase. I've run out of miles on my 2 year old Continental Grand Prix Supersonics. Unfortunately they stopped making the 20mm in the 650c, so I've got to find my next best option.

I posted the question to the Roadbikereview forum and had both the Michelin Pro2 Race and the Tufo Jet Elite (which is a tubular that fits on a clincher rim). Both came in 23mm 650c, the same that Continental now offers with the Supersonics.

So I found myself trying to balance between weight, puncture resistance, rolling resistance, max PSI, aerodymics, etc. Here is a link to an article that was useful in this process: link

I ended up going with the Supersonics for the following reasons:
- they have worked well for me in the past
- none of these are known for longevity, so I will only be using them during races
- race courses tend to be 'cleaner' and I won't have to worry as much about road debris
- the only significant downside to these tires when compared to the other tires is puncture resistance; in all other categories, I believe these to be better tires

One of these years I'll probably make the leap to the tubulars, but I'm not ready just yet.

Anyway, thought I would share.

Follow my Ironman Journey Blog here: Ironman 2007 and feel free to post comments / advise.

So...why do we have a Rider's Blog anyway?

Wikipedia defines a Blog as: A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), audio (podcasting) or sexual topics (Adult blog), and are part of a wider network of social media.

Okay, what does that mean to me?
Simple really; this blog is dedicated to the spirit and camaraderie of cycling and is a medium for WCCC riders to write about anything that pertains to cycling.

However, it doesn't stop there. While this blog's primarily focus is centered on cycling, you can pretty much write about anything (within reason).

Want to know who has a Bottom Bracket tool you can borrow? Ask for it on the blog.

Your significant other threatened to sell your old carbon bike on eBay for $50! Sell it on the blog instead.

There's a great ride that you heard about from your brother's friend's second-cousin twice removed and you would like to know who in the club would be interested in riding it with you. Use the blog to post it.

Need a good receipe for potato salad? Use the blog.

You get the idea.
The blog will not replace the WCCC website rather, it's designed to enhance it. What a spectacular day to ride! First off, let me apologize for any typo's since I'm still feeling the effects of the Bourbon Porter from IH!
I took 11 riders out on cue sheet #103 about 5 minutes behind the B+ group lead by Christiane.
Randy "Happy Hour" Roday pulled strong for the first 15 miles. I had to remind him that this was "B" ride and he graciously slowed down. That doesn't mean there wasn't another rider who stepped up and hammered. We played cat-n-mouse with the Jeff's group on our way out-they went down Wilson, we climbed Rosenvick (which is St. Malachia's alter ego).
At the Turkey Hill in Cochranville we had the opportunity to meet one of Cochranville's upstanding citizens (I believe he was on the Work Release Program from the State Penn.). Anyway, this POS told us to "get this s**t off the sidewalk" as he and his <<cough, cough>> wife walked by us. Lucky for him we were clad in spandex or a SERIOUS butt-whopping was about to commence. Sadly, two of our bikes were worth more than the bucket-of-rust he was driving. Some people should not be allowed to reproduce!!!
Now that we recharged and refilled, and had a good laugh at the expense of our Rhodes Scholar friend, we headed back to WC.
Everyone took turns leading as we enjoyed an absolutely beautiful ride.
The group split as we turned onto 842. We decided to forego a few of the remaining roads in order to crank it down 842.
Our total mileage was around 52 and our avg. speed was 16.8
GPS data:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3695334
Some of us mustered the strength to climb a bar stool at IH and consume some frosty libations.
Great ride everyone and thanks for joining our group!

Your Saturday "B" level ride

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099675769510036818" style="DISPLAY: block; The rewards are stunning vistas of the richest farmland in America.

Registration is $15 if you register on line with Active.com. The supervisors approved a master plan for that property that includes an extensive trail system for hikers, mountain bikes (pedal bikes), and horses. The township and our clubs are relying on volunteers to help build and maintain the trails.

Please see the message below about the kick off meeting for anyone interested in lending a hand to establish this trail system.

The property will be open to the public either partially or entirely in a month or so. Hopefully we'll be able to offer mountain bike clinics, family events, and/or a fund raising race at some point in the near future.
THANK YOU for your support, and I hope to see you at this meeting or at a scheduled work day in the woods.
Dave Baxter

Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 12:32 PMSubject: Kick-Off Meeting

Good afternoon –

East Bradford Township will be hosting a "Sonoco Property Kick-off" meeting on Thursday August 9 at 7:30 pm. The main purpose of the meeting is to unite our primary volunteer resources – the Chester County Trails Club and the West Chester Cycling Club – and provide an overview of the trail building project at Sonoco. We will establish a volunteer work schedule and review the project phases.

This meeting is open to the public. Anyone interested in participated in this effort is welcome. As we headed into the mist, it was apparent that today was going to be very hot and humid. Another advantage to leaving at 7:30 AM is that you miss the heat of the day.

Right before climbing out of WC on 842, one rider turned around and headed back to town. We pressed on with 8.

The group stopped in Kennett for a much needed hydration break (thanks Juan!).

The ride along Creek Road provided much needed relief from the heat. We experienced several micro-climates as we rode in and out of the shade and along the water.

The ride deviated off Rte. 52 as we took a right on to Center Meeting Road to Rte. 100 North (again, our goal was trying to avoid riding the blazing heat of the sun).

Ted and Mike stopped at the Wawa at Rte. 1 and 100 in Chadds Ford to wait for another rider. They we told to ride on and not to wait. We hope he made it home okay.

The others took off towards WC along Creek Road. Eventually we all met at the top of Rte. 842, sweaty, hot and tired, but satisfied to have another great ride under our belts. By the way, we were back in town by 10:30 AM! Yet another advantage of leaving early.

Total distance: 43 miles
Average speed: 17.1 m.p.h
(yeah, that's 'technically' an A- pace, but cut us a break, it was hot today!)

Great ride everyone!

Dog Daze Ride

Attention all WCCC Riders:
It's that time of year again when the Brandywine Bicycle Club sponsors their Dog Daze Ride on August 11, 2007

Ride Features
• Quiet scenic roads
• The terrain is rolling with a few “grabbers”
in each ride
• 27, 50, 77 and 100 mile route options
• SAG support on all routes
• Well stocked rest stops with fresh fruits,
snacks and home-baked goods
• Hearty lunch included! There were 594 racers in all of the categories and I am surprised that there was only 30 DNF (Did Not Finish) This was a Big Race. Below is a list of WCCC members that attended.

Sue Mrugal (WCCC colors) 1st Place for “Sport Women II” Yes she did it again. This is Sue’s third 1st place win this year. Great Job and she rode most of it with a loose cassette.

Dick Sabo (WCCC colors) 3rd Place for “Sport Master II” This was Dick’s first MTB race and to finish in third is a Great way to get started. Way to GO!

Marty Mrugal (WCCC colors) 5th Place for “Sport Vet II” I would hate to see how Marty would finish if he didn’t race the day before! ?? This Guy has some legs!

Jeff Ziemski 5th Place “Sport Single Speed” Jeff’s time was unbelievable and to power it on a single speed! Dam Good! There was only a 2 second difference between him and Martin. It must have been a dash at the end! I wish I saw that!

Bob Perna 5th Place “Super Sport 40 +” Bob Past me yelling “Go Iron Hill”, then he faded away from me as I tried to keep up. Great Job!!!

Chris Jackson 6th Place (Wearing WCCC socks) “Sport Master I” Chris has really got this racing thing down. He has been finishing 5th or 6th in most of the races. Soon he will get those 2nd and 3rd place win’s.

Kevin Coombe 7th Place (WCCC colors) “Advance Vet I” This was Kevin’s first MTB race and did really well for his first race. Great job! Keep it up Kevin!

Dan Sabella 23rd Place (WCCC colors) “Sport Vet II” Well I felt ready, no mechanicals, had some cramping but everyone had that. Next time I plan to switch plate numbers with Marty when he is not looking. I wish I had an excuse!

Tony Finding 23rd Place (WCCC colors) “Sport Single Speed”. Tony didn’t want me to put his placing down but I know people would find out. Besides Tony had some mechanical and brush with some yellow jacks. Two Flat Tires in one race can take 15 to 20 minutes of your time. You did Great Tony, I would have tossed the flag down on the second flat, but you hung in there to finish.

Mike Ging 33rd Place “Expert Senior” I thought Tony had it bad, but Mike takes the cake on this one. He ran over a yellow jacks hive. He got stung 20 times in the first 15 minutes, then a flat from a tear in his side wall of his tire and somehow he still was able to finish. Great Effort!

Finally a special thanks goes out to Kim Dubeck (WCCC member last year). She saw that one of our WCCC members was in need of a tube during the race and she stopped and handed one off to them. It was the fastest hand off I have ever seen it seem to take all of three seconds. Kim was in front of me and we came across Tony and she yelled out to him what do you need and bam she quickly helped out. Thanks Kim from all of us that raced J

Dan Sabella
WCCC MTB Ride Leader
wccc-mtb@comcast.net
mtb@westchestercycling.com

Fair Hill Race on Sunday 7-15-07

**Fair Hill Race** Registration ends 1/2 hour before each race! type='text'>Valley Forge Ride

Happy Independence Day!!!
I am planning on leading a ride to Historic Valley Forge Park on Saturday morning. The distance is longer than the posted cue sheet since we have to bypass Mill Road (the overpass is missing).
For those of you who have not had the pleasure of riding to VF, it's a really nice ride. There are some hills to climb and a wonderful flat road to stretch your legs on.
Weather permitting, this should be a GREAT ride.
Look forward to riding with everyone on Saturday.

Pace: B/B+ (14-17 m.p.h)
Distance: 44.1 miles
Difficulty: 4.5
(1=easist 10=hardest)
<script should consider this-even if you are not a MTB rider:
1) You will have a great ride on generally great roads with great riders!
2) We leave from Downingtown at 7:00AM
(leaving from D'town is 16 total miles less at an easier pace)
3) You will have a nice break and eat PB&J sandwiches and bananas for lunch
(so, in reality, the ride is really two short rides with a 3-hour break in between).
4) You will be representing WCCC in an important way.
5) Because, as of 6/21/07 there is not a "B" ride posted on our webpage.
6) It's for a good cause
<div
